Henkel, a global leader in the adhesives segment, has achieved considerable advances in efficiency and sustainability by applying data science in its operations. In collaboration with ST-One, a company specializing in technology for the industry, the multinational has significantly reduced natural gas consumption and costs related to water consumption and its CO₂ emissions per year.

Approximately a year ago, Henkel implemented an advanced data collection and analysis tool that allowed, for example, dynamic adjustment to the optimal vapor pressure value in its boiler. This generated monthly savings of R$ 56,000.00, totaling R$ 682,000.00 per year (119,000 euros).

In addition, the company has optimized water use by better controlling the source of water consumption, which has resulted in annual savings of €46,000, a 33% reduction in water costs. “After implementing the ST-One solution, it was possible to have a overview of the entire water use process and assess from which source it was most beneficial to extract the resource. After an evaluation, it took a very low investment to implement buoys to control the water level of the boxes, and with this, we were able to make the decisions that allowed us to fulfill our commitment to the environment and ESG measures,” says Murilo Zampronio, Engineering and Maintenance supervisor at Henkel.

The supervisor also highlighted the importance of managing the ISO 50001 standard, which establishes a framework to improve energy efficiency, reduce costs, and improve environmental performance.

“It is a very complex standard, which requires the management of each engine in the plant, and this demands a huge effort when putting this into practice. It would take many people to do so, since the plant has eight technologies and 79,000 square meters, with more than 3.5 thousand assets”, he describes.

With ST-One’s technology, Henkel was able to monitor, in an agile, assertive and safe way, which are the significant consumers of energy and optimize the production process in up to 20 minutes. Currently, there are more than one billion data collected on the platform. “The integration of measurement and control technologies allowed the monitoring of energy performance, resulting in a significant reduction in waste and operating costs,” he says.

ESG aligned to Data Science

Tiago Machado, co-founder of ST-One, emphasizes that  in face of growing concerns about ESG practices, Henkel has sought ways to minimize its environmental impact while maintaining the production performance and quality of its products. The solution came from the combination of cutting-edge IoT technology and data science, which made it possible to collect detailed information and develop a connectivity protocol for efficient monitoring of equipment.

“The continuous monitoring of the equipment allowed for data-driven adjustments, increasing the operating time of the machines and improving efficiency, which resulted in reduced operating costs,” explains Machado. “Data culture stands out as an essential tool for the transformation of modern industry, promoting process optimization and cost reduction, while contributing to sustainability goals.”

Energy efficiency

Energy efficiency is among the most benefited areas by data science. By monitoring energy consumption in real-time and analyzing usage patterns, businesses can identify waste and implement measures to reduce consumption. “Predictive analytics technologies help adjust the operation of machines and systems based on demand, avoiding unnecessary peaks and improving overall energy efficiency,” concludes Machado.

About ST-One

Founded in 2020 by engineers Guilherme Francesco Cittolin and Tiago Machado, with executive Rodrigo Cruz R. Gonçalves as CEO. ST-One develops technology that uses Data Science to promote digitalization in different industry sectors.

The technology developed by the startup promotes the reduction of waste and costs, optimizing production processes and operations in the supply chain. Futhermore, it improves product quality and consistency by monitoring several relevant parameters to the manufacturing industry.

In its client portfolio it has major brands such as ABinBev, Klabin, Pepsico, Henkel and Kraft Heinz, exporting technology from Curitiba to more than 20 countries. Get to know more information about us.
